“Why can’t everyone be treated equal?” Shmuel wondered. Life is very cruel at the Jewish concentration camp, now that Hitler has been killing Jews because of how they look and their beliefs. Everyday life is very harsh, working hard just to be whipped or injured for no reason. This concentration camp in particular is located near a large house where a little boy named Bruno lives. Bruno lived one of the best lives possible, he wasn’t Jewish and his dad was high up in the German army. But, Bruno was unaware of any of the work that his dad was doing. At this certain point in time Jews were considered as different creatures that would end up destroying our nation. Bruno was such a great friend, he brought him food and games to play each and every day. But, Shmuel had to be very careful because if one of the soldiers saw Shmuel out of line and not working, he would beat him up so that he became very weak and ill. After long minutes waiting for Bruno to arrive he finally came. “Hi Bruno!” Shmuel whispered. “Hi” he replied back. “What happened to your eye?” Bruno asked. “The soldiers caught me sitting down the other day.” Shmuel said sadly. “I’m sorry.” Bruno answered. “Did you bring any food?” Shmuel asked. “Yes!” Bruno replied. “Thank you!” He said. Shmuel like every other day was starving, and appreciated the kind heart of his dear friend Bruno. “Where’s your family?” Bruno soon asked. “My mother was already killed, and my dad hasn’t shown up lately.” He sadly replied. “I’m so sorry.” Bruno answered. “Could you help me find him?” Shmuel asked. “I’ll have to see, I don’t want to make my mama and papa mad.” “Do you see what they do to us?” Shmuel yelled. “Just go!” “You don’t care that your father is going to kill me?” Shmuel took off with his wheelbarrow that he was using to do his daily tasks, and went back to the main camp. He waited there many hours tossing a football up and down in the air, but after awhile Bruno realized Shmuel wasn’t coming. With this Bruno snuck his way back through the trees and into his backyard hoping that his parents wouldn’t see him sneaking back in. Luckily they didn’t, and he went on with his usual boring routine of sitting is room doing nothing at all. The day went on faster and faster and soon it became late. Bruno knew nothing whatsoever about the work that his dad was doing, and he didn’t know why his dad was doing this work. Because of his dad’s work the windows were boarded up, and was not allowed to go in the backyard along with the many other harsh laws that his dad implied with his job. Very faint light seeped through the boarded windows, letting Bruno know that it was night time. “Supper time!” His mother yelled. “Bruno come and eat!” But, Bruno had his mind on many other things, was he going to help Shmuel or let his dad do his job without knowing what he was doing to the poor and innocent people. With this Bruno closed his eyes and drifted off wondering what he would do and encounter the next
