The history of the Internet begins with the development of electronic computers in the 1950s. Initial concepts of packet networking originated in several computer science laboratories in the United States, Great Britain, and France. The US Department of Defense awarded contracts as early as the 1960s for packet network systems. However, not once did anyone consider the potential uses of the Web, nor even think of what it could possibly be used for in the future (Zilberstein). The Internet has largely affected the entire world’s culture, though mostly through negativity. The Internet causes negative opinions to form regarding other cultures. This problem is caused by, for one, the general nature of the Internet itself. The internet is all about anonymity. For example, one does not know if he/she is speaking to a man, a woman, a Russian, a Christian, a Republican or an African-American. Merriam-Webster defines anonymity as “the state of lacking individuality, distinction, or the ability to be recognized.” When no being has any idea who/whom the other beings in which they are interacting with are, they aren’t afraid to say or do or act as anything. In many ways, the Web is based around the ability to access. If one has access, he/she has to power to say literally anything in a plethora of ways: through poems, art, songs, blogs, forums, sharing sites, and several others. Therefore, if these people cannot access the Internet, these people do not have a voice in which to portray their culture. If these people are not able to portray their culture in a positive light the aforementioned ignorant beings can draw false conclusions about these little-known cultures. The Internet is a tool.
