World History Meshes With English Many may say that World History is the most boring out of all of their subjects. Others would disagree when it comes to certain units in the class. The longest unit in world history would be The Greeks being 75 slides of notes long. Even though it is the longest unit it is also the most interesting of all the units World History covers. The most interesting points of this unit is Mythology, Athens, and Sparta. To kick things off Greek Mythology had many different gods and goddesses. Most gods or goddesses in other religions are pictured as perfect but in Greek Myths they are far from perfect. For example Zeus cheated on his wife Hera several times over. The Greeks used Myths to explain and understand nature along with explaining human behavior. The after life for the dead in Greek myths is in the underworld ruled by Hades. Hades, Poseidon, and Zeus are the gods you would hear of the most often as the are considered the big three. All of them are brothers, since Zeus saved his siblings from Cronos he was named King of the gods, he chose to control the sky, Poseidon was next and chose the sea, and Hades chose the underworld. Sparta was by far one of the more interesting city states. Sparta developed into a military state. Both girls and boys were trained to put service to Sparta above all else. Women received athletic training and sent their husbands into battle with the words ”return as victors, carrying your shields, or as dead men carried upon your shields.” Boys started training at age seven, it was harsh physical training. They could marry at age 20 but had to live in the barracks till age 30. At age 30-60 they were put on active reserve and at age 60 they could retire but life expectancy was much shorter than it is now so very few if any made it to the age of 60. Athens and Sparta eventually declared war on each other, Sparta won but the war lead to both City States
