The Vendetta By Guy de Maupassant Four possible aspects can be found throughout a modern short story. They are subtle characterization, psychological truths, revelations and dramatic irony. A short story must include at least one of these aspects to be a modern short story. The Vendetta, by Guy de Maupassant, is not a modern short story because it does not meet this criteria. This story builds on a fast-paced plot, rather than focusing on subtle characterization. In the beginning few paragraphs she vows revenge on the boy who killed her son, in the line, “There, there, you shall be avenged my little one, my boy, my poor child.” For a large part of it she trains the dog to attack. There is not must detailed based information on her. The author directly states knowledge about her age and personality. The story describes her as “frail” and “old”. The reader sees this account to be true in the quote, “Sleep, sleep, you shall be avenged do you hear! Your mother swears it!” This is the plotline throughout the story. The whole time she can only focus on her promise. The author states, “She could no longer sleep at night, she had no more sleep nor peace; obstinately she searched for a way.” Clearly she has become very involved with her vow of revenge and it is all she can think about. One could even say she had become obsessed. This is directly stated information in the
