Since the introduction of global scale corporations, unsafe working conditions have always been prominent. Workers in factories for these global corporations, which are often people in poorer countries, have had to work long hours for little pay, in places without basic needs, like heating or cooling systems. The people who work in these factories do not know any better, because these dangerous conditions are what they have known all their life. As they do not know any better, they do not fight for better rights, and they do not have anyone fighting for them, due to global corporations greed for money. Les Misérables takes place during the French Revolution. The whole novel is about a free and more liberal society different from the monarchy living in France during this time. One of the characters met in the book is named Enjolras, who is one of the strongest leaders seen from the revolutionaries. During his time in the novel, he is seen as wanting to help France as a whole get better. After killing a man who went against the revolution, Enjolras, in a speech says “in the future, no man shall slay his fellow, the earth shall be radiant, the human race shall love. It will come...and it is that it may come that [the revolutionaries] are going to die” (Hugo 437). Enjolras’s speech is highlight the fact that nobody should ever be in control of another man, and everyone should be civil to one another. Unfortunately, in today’s society people do not to rule over each other in order to get jobs done. But, that does not mean that those who rule, like global corporations, have to be any less civil than those who do not, like the factory workers. Enjolras also mentions that the revolutionaries most likely will die for the freedom of others. Global companies may have to lose money and time in order to make sure their workers are safe and paid properly. Enjolras sees the revolutionaries dying as the greater good than seeing evil thriving, which can be compared to companies having to take some money loss to prevent more accidents like the ones in Bangladesh from happening again and harming innocent workers. He knows that if he sacrifices himself for the greater good, than it will help more people in the end when the monarchy is replaced, and more people are able to use their rights, to do things like vote, or have more freedoms.
