Inside is a comedy special written, directed, and performed by comedian Bo Burnham. Burnham has spent his comedic career analyzing and criticizing problems around the world. His newest Netflix special, Inside, was created during the height of the COVID pandemic and the midst of the nationwide lockdown. Burnham used this time to address the younger generation of the country and present problems that were becoming more clear and relevant. The way that it is set up, as well as what he is saying and doing between songs is just as important, if not more, than the rest. Burnham starts the very beginning of the special by walking into an empty room through a door that leads outside. This may not seem important at first, but soon becomes an important part of conveying the messages he is sending. The light from the door is the only time that we see unfiltered, natural light coming from outside. After he shuts the door 44 seconds into the special, he is then seen as locked inside of his home, which is where the entirety of the special takes place. Burnham sings a multitude of songs in the special, many of them which end with an abrupt cut. Most of the time, this cut is to a still, empty room. He uses this setup to show how he can express feelings about problems in the world, but soon are forgotten and left alone like nothing happened. After the fourth song of the special, it cuts to an apparent television advertisement, where Burnham acts as a social brand consultant. Throughout this entire bit, Burnham pokes fun at companies and the way that they handle social and political problems in the world.
