the basement in Grim and Gram’s home is the down under. The basement isn’t well taken care of so the carpet smells like low tide. Meaning that it smells fishy. Then the “walls” that Gram glued in (To cover up the cement walls in the basement) are falling around and the boards to the walls are sloppily glued. This gives the reader the impression that the down under is a shabby place, but Max doesn’t complain. This is because he states that “He has the place all to himself.” 2. When does this story take place? (setting) The chapter take place in the summer. Explain what he meant. Kevin “scared” him, but not the regular kind of scare. Max says the kind of scare was confusing, “like wait, what? What’s going on?” That is how Max put it. This is because Max was very confused when Freak kept calling Max “earthling.” 2. Why is Kevin waving his crutch at the tree? Kevin is waving his crutch at the tree because something was stuck up there but he couldn’t reach “it” because his legs are lame, he can’t walk very well. When he was waving his crutch he was trying to reach his mechanical bird. Then when Kevin couldn’t get the bird down he grabbed his Americain Flier (an old brand of wagon.) Then Max came and helped Kevin since he couldn’t jump. Max got the mechanical bird down and Kevin was happy on the inside but didn’t show the happiness to Max. 3. Where is Max pulling Kevin at the end of this chapter? At the end of the chapter Max was pulling Kevin to show him the cellar. This is because Max wanted to tell Kevin about Gram and Grim and the basement, but it was too much for telling.
