Tradition in families, represent their culture along with expressing their own personalities. In the novel, "Like Water for Chocolate" by Lauren Esquivel, the family heavily relies on their tradtions and culture. The main character, Tita, is inable to marry because of her ansestors rule, the youest female in the family will take care of the mother until she passes. Throughout the jounrey of Tita trying to break free from her families tradition, she cries, makes food, and by the end burns. In the story, "Like Water for Chocolate", the author utilizes symbols to enhance Tita's insipration and desire to break free. In the begining of the novel, the chracters appear in the kitchen, where all the symbols are first uncovered. Tears, are the first symbol Esquivel reveals. The appears of fire/heat reveal a negative and a postion outlook. Throughout the novel, Tita's experiences with fire and heat alternates between negative and positive feelings. After the marrage of Rosaura and Pedro, Pedro still disired to be with Tita. One day they snuck into another room from the rest of the family and began to make love. The family saw the light from the fire inside of the room, reprsenting the passion the two had for each other. Likewise, at the end of the novel, both Tita and Pedro. die by going into a burning tunnel to be together at last. In the final scenes, fire/heat revealing the passion and love Tita and Pedro had. Throught the novel, fire/heat reveal the passion built up between the character: however, fire/heat also represents destruction. At the end of the novel, the house burnt up in flames.
