In the book, Kamala Kan also known as Ms. Marvel struggles with how she fits at her school when she is a Muslim. She wants to fit in and be like everyone else without abandoning her religion. In the graphic novel, Superman Smashes the Klan (SSTK) by Gene Luen Yang and art by Gurihiru. Clark Kent who transforms into Superman has his own problems. He is an alien from the planet Krypton, he doesn’t want people to make fun of him being an alien so he tries to ignore it. Although, Superman Smashes the Klan showed its theme better because it had more character and structural representation of how superman and other characters find their place.
In SSTK the theme is you should try to embrace yourself and who you are even if others don’t like it. Many characters show this theme in different ways, yet, the main character that showed this theme was Superman. Superman finds out he is an alien and forms of his deceased parents come back to talk to him. In the beginning, Superman wants nothing to do with these weird creatures who speak a weird language, but, once he gets to know they are his parents in another form he begins to rethink his decision. Because Superman’s parents are dead he is the only one who can see them, Superman starts seeing his parents around town with every activity he does. After some time, he becomes annoyed and confronts them about who they are. Superman then realizes what he suspected was true, he was an alien. After this discovery, Superman makes many attempts to push them away and hide who he is. Superman gets fed up and tries to talk again realizing that he needs to embrace this part of him as he does the rest of himself. Superman

Marvel, an important theme is to be who you are and not worry about fitting in or pleasing others. This theme also relates to finding your sense of belonging because you find out how you belong when you become yourself instead of someone else. The character that shows this the most is Kamala when she changes Ms. Marvel to be more like herself. In this book, Kamala is given the part to play of Ms. Marvel Kamala ends up changing the way she does things because it helped her be herself instead of someone else. Now Vick, Kamala’s friend Bruno’s brother, has gotten himself kidnapped for the “gang” he worked with. Kamla decides to be a good friend and tries to get Vick back. Kamala makes a first attempt as Ms. Marvel and ends up failing to retrieve Vick. After the failed attempt, Kamala decides she needs to go at this from a different angle, she decides to change her given a costume to a different one that resembles herself more. When she creates the new costume she returns back to where Vick is kept and tries again. However, this time she fights and creates distractions as Kamal likes to do it, instead of how Ms. Marvel would. She embraces herself into her hero form of Ms. Marvel and ends up rescuing Vick. As you can see, after, Kamala decided to embrace who she was and wasn’t being who everyone wanted her to be she was able to succeed and find where she belonged. This is similar to Superman because in the end they both embraced who they were and didn’t care about what
