Greed and dishonesty, humans embody these traits in an effort to achieve society’s unattainable standards. These same traits were the fatal flaws of the Sinclair family. The story We Were Liars follows Cady Sinclair as she tries to uncover the cause of her mysterious accident. The Sinclairs return to Beechwood island under new circumstances during summer 15. With Gran dead, the family inheritance is on the line. The aunts all try to appease Grandad by compromising their childrens’ integrity, this turns the liars against their parents. In response to their parents’ greedy behavior and lies, the liars set a fire that ends up killing all of them but Cady. Ian Buruma’s book “The Collaborators' ' Three Stories of Deception and Survival in World War II' ' explores the human trait of lying and the gray area of deception. The book dives into the lives of three fabulists who were collaborating with the enemy forces during wartime. Buruma notes that lying is sometimes necessary for survival and that resistors and collaborators alike can be both good and evil. Sometimes small lies can cause an explosive effect, “Yoshiko paid the biggest price of the three. …She was convicted of treason in a public trial that involved evidence derived from fanciful accounts of her exploits and executed in March 1948 with a single bullet to the back of the head.” (For three liars during WWII, deception proves to be both good and evil). Due to lies and deceiving, Yoshiko faced the ultimate consequence. While she was able to have a small taste of fame in China after being a spy in Japan, she still had to pay the price and was eventually executed. Boris Johnson, a politician who served in the government was his own downfall as he eventually was caught in his own web of lies. Johnson eventually pushed everyone he worked with away and his constant lies have been speculated to have the greatest negative impact on his country, party, and government. After his lies, Johnson eventually lost credibility with people all around him through his constant and obvious lies, leading to his downfall within his career. Not only did he lose the trust of the people around him, he also eventually lost any possible credibility he had to his name deeming him untrustworthy to many people for many years to come. While lying may seem like an easy way to avoid tough problems, in the long run, telling the truth is more beneficial.
