The Value of Life “The death of Ivan Ilych” is a story by Leo Tolstoy that talks about Ivan Ilych’s life, and how he behaved during his life. The story focuses on the value of life because the author tries to explain how life disappears, even regardless how rich or important people are, everybody dies. The author tells how was affected Ivan for his ambition, and how he was punished for not live in a right way. Life has rules and some people do not follow them, and they are castigated in different ways depending on their bad doings. Ivan lived his life as he thought was correct, but he just was interested in his social and superficial life. The story starts at the end with the Ivan’s death, telling reaction of his supposed friends, but to everybody the real importance was the benefits of his death. Everything in life has a cost, for Ivan was his long agony and painful death with no mercy. Envy, vanity, and vice conducted him to false people because he never looked for real friends and love. Ambitious people use to others to get benefits, and Ivan used ambition to improve his life status. Although he learned the real value of life, it was late for him, his life was gone. He learned that his life was full of hypocrisy, but for his bad fortune, he learned it so late to remediate it. Ivan wanted people’s pity to die as he believed it supposed to be, but sometimes people do not consider to others’ suffering.
