The inmates were treated so poorly that they felt they needed to retaliate against the guards. Working in a prison is a possible career choice for me, this book taught me issues that can arise while working in a prison. As a correctional officer, I want to be a productive and effective, I will be friendly with the inmates but not become friends. Treating them with respect will often times result in them giving respect back, which will make them trust and respect your authority. I will be attentive of my surroundings and inmate interactions.
County jails have had to manage this increased population while ensuring safety and security of both staff and inmates. The need for additional space, staffing, and resources has been a challenge for many county jails, with some struggling to meet the
Newjack: Guarding Sing Sing describes the experience of a new correctional officer who works at the Sing Sing prison in Ossining, NY. In the book, Ted Conover goes into detail about the daily trials of a CO and life within the prison walls. Within these descriptions he develops a clear picture of the distinct communities which develop within the prison. Communities “are typically defined by a geographic area; however, they can also be based on shared interests or characteristics such as religion, race, age, or occupation” (Community Needs Assessment, 2013). In Newjack, the most prominent communities that are examined in depth are the inmate community and the correctional officer community with the correctional officer community being the main community of interest.
The role of correctional officers are to maintain security and control within the penitentiary and the immediate surrounding perimeter to ensure safety of the public and inmates. The secondary role of correctional officers are to provide rehabilitative means to the prisoners often in the form of job skills and anger management. Along with rehabilitative treatment, correctional officers are to ensure that prisoners, particularly those placed in the level two housing unit, are prepared for reintegration into society upon

As a Probation and Parole Officer, my duties is to enforce the law but primary is to help individuals with social resources so they can become productive member of society. Probation and Parole Officer should communicate with other law enforcement officer to gain information or gain more detail about the person that the Probation Officer is supervising. Every individual will be placed in their correct supervision level as set forth by SENTAC and sentencing order.
There are many benefits for this job. One benefit would be that you get to play an important role in helping convicted criminals get back to society. The largest internal challenge that the Bureau of Prisons faces is adequate levels of bed space and staffing in order to safely manage the population of prisons. The crowding of prisons has been identified as a material weakness and is highly recognized by the Department of Justice, which is the agency in which the Bureau of Prisons is run under. There recently has been a reported decline in the federal prison population, yet it still remains over crowded by thirty percent. This has caused the BOP to increase its inmate to staff ratio, but officer’s safety continuously remains at
With gang violence continually getting worse in the United States, prisons and their staff need to make sure they are ready to take on dealing with them. This includes having the right amount of staff so chaos doesn 't break out. It is important for everyone to be aware in these situations so in the long run the government systems do not actually make it worse (Trulson, Marquart, and Kawucha). Correctional officers and guards are an important reason to why prison gangs exist and are thriving. Officers use to be able to know the names of all the inmates, thus the inmates tended to behave better for they knew if they violated a code they would get in trouble.
Provide training to all prison staff on mental health issues. Training should reinforce staff understanding of mental disorders, raise awareness on human rights, challenge stigmatizing attitudes and encourage mental health promotion for guards and inmates. In addition, prison health workers need more specialized skills to identify and manage the prisoners’ mental health. According to HM Prison Probation & Service (2018), prison staff ‘keep those sentenced to prison in custody, helping them lead law-abiding and useful lives, both while they are in prison and after they are released.’ It believes that prison staff will play a huge part in the life of an offender, helping them to learn and develop new skills (HM Prison Probation & Service,
“Correction officers supervise convicted offenders when they are in jail, in prison, or in the community on probation or parole” (National Center for Victims of Crime, 2008). When a defendant is found guilty, they are usually sentenced to time in jail, houses of correction, prisons, probation, or parole. When they are sentenced to time in prison, it is the responsibility of corrections and their officers to ensure that the defendant is treated humanely. It is also their job to make sure that the correctional facility that is holding the offender is safe and secure.
Over the past three and a half years I have spent my life studying in school. I have studied for hours and hours about the field of criminal justice; the reason it exists, its history and development, theories that are used to explain topics in criminal justice, and cases that have been monumental in changing the way that criminal justice works. While all of these are great to learn about the field of criminal justice itself cannot be learned from reading textbooks and memorizing theories. This is why I am interested in an internship with the Griffin Police Department. I want to learn how the criminal justice system is in action, how things actually play out outside of the scholastic setting.
