What does it mean to be a correctional officer? A correctional officer (COs) is an officer who has numerous responsibilities, they are very important in all prison systems. COs are the ones who keep everything in order in prison institutions; they are the ones who enforce rules and regulations, maintain order, etc. there are many dangerous positions in the criminal justice field, and being a correctional officer is one of them. The position of CO carries with it the intrinsic danger of physical injury and mental stress (Ferdik & Smith, 2017). They have to deal with inmates with infectious diseases, prison gangs, inmates with mental illness, and riots; that is not even half of the risks that they face in their profession.
