There are many subjects in the book “The Essentials of Criminal Justice.” Through the fourteen chapters, the chapter I will be discussing is chapter eleven. Chapter eleven talks about the history of correctional institutions, jails, prisons, and alternate correctional institutions. In this paper, I will be discussing only part of chapter eleven. It will be discussing the history of the correctional Institutions which includes the following: the history of the correctional institutions, the origin of corrections in the United States, the development of prisons, the New York and Pennsylvania systems, and the comparisons of the 19th and 20th century correction systems.
1.) After reading New Jack: Guarding Sing Sing I found most interesting that half the time Conover is in danger and scared for his life. But he must learn how to deal with the inmates and survive the spine-chilling conditions. With the United States prison population reaching a record high of over two million inmates, the system was in a crisis. It was more likely for an African American in California to go to prison rather than attending a state university.
The Georgia Department of Corrections was established with the main purpose of protecting and serving the public by managing offenders and ensuring all of the state's residents live in a safe and secure environment. To this date, The Georgia Department of Corrections (GDC) is responsible for just over fifty thousand (50,000) state prisoners, with it being recorded as the largest prison system in America. With such a large capacity one can draft that the GDC has a large scope of operation and organizational structure having employed over ten thousand (10000) members of staff. Outlined further in this article will be a detailed description of the Georgia Department of Corrections organizational structure, funding sources, goals, objectives, roles
Some of these temporary officers were not interested in making corrections as a career that resulted in high turnover rates. These guards were paid at the lower end of the salary scale and a lack of advancement opportunities that brought dissatisfactions. In order to correct this structural defect, prison officials should offer higher salaries, clear and concise advancement opportunities. Using these techniques, prison official would influence guards to remain longer and have pride in their
There are so many mentally ill people in correctional facilities because most families do not know how to help their loves ones who suffer from a mental illness, so the call the police for help. Majority of the police officers do not know what to do or how to handle people with a mental illness disease. Police officers who are not trained to deal with the mentally ill often do not recognize that person is ill. Some police officers do not recognize if the individual should or not go to jail or a treatment center or medical facility. The impact of law enforcement and the judicial system dealing with people with a mental illness is to assist the inmates with the help they need.
A common misconception of probation officers is that they are correction officers. Ricky Galindo, a probation officer, mentions, “Do you get tired from working in jail all the time?” Galindo gets asked this question on a daily because people assume that probation and corrections officers are the same job. Corrections officers work inside of the prison or jails, while Galindo works as a field officer. His job consists of going to the offender’s house and making sure they are complying with the court orders, and conducting warrant searches.
Probation Officers Probation Officers watch over and work with people who have been convicted of crimes, but were not sentenced to jail time. Instead of going to jail, the criminals/offenders are given a probationary time where they must obey everything set forth by the judge. If you wish to become a Probation Officer there are many things you must do to achieve your goal. To become a Probation Officer you must have a college degree. It is also required that you have at least 4 years of college education.
In order to maintain social and societal stability, the criminal justice system is comprised of many processes that seek to accomplish this. The main components are: law enforcement, courts, and corrections. Correctional officers supervise work to ensure those convicted of a crime do not violate their agreements and play an essential role in the justice system by overseeing the daily custody of offenders. This topic intrigues me because all I know about the correctional officer field, is what I have heard on the news or seen in movies/television programs, and popular culture’s depiction of this field doesn’t seem to portray them in the best limelight.
Along with African-American/Blacks, the Hispanic population is underrepresented at both the state and federal levels while the Caucasian/White population are underrepresented (Walker, Spohn, & DeLone, 2018). This essay will discuss multiple different races and ethinicities to regard their population make up within the prison system. Although race and ethnicity relate to one another they are different. According to Walker et al. (2018), race is defined as the, “major biological divisions of mankind,” for
Provide training to all prison staff on mental health issues. Training should reinforce staff understanding of mental disorders, raise awareness on human rights, challenge stigmatizing attitudes and encourage mental health promotion for guards and inmates. In addition, prison health workers need more specialized skills to identify and manage the prisoners’ mental health. According to HM Prison Probation & Service (2018), prison staff ‘keep those sentenced to prison in custody, helping them lead law-abiding and useful lives, both while they are in prison and after they are released.’ It believes that prison staff will play a huge part in the life of an offender, helping them to learn and develop new skills (HM Prison Probation & Service,
“Correction officers supervise convicted offenders when they are in jail, in prison, or in the community on probation or parole” (National Center for Victims of Crime, 2008). When a defendant is found guilty, they are usually sentenced to time in jail, houses of correction, prisons, probation, or parole. When they are sentenced to time in prison, it is the responsibility of corrections and their officers to ensure that the defendant is treated humanely. It is also their job to make sure that the correctional facility that is holding the offender is safe and secure.
Professionalism as Bartollas and Siegel define it “refers to a set of character strengths and personal values directed at providing the highest quality service to others in the workplace, both colleagues and clients” (2013). In the field of corrections, professionalism affects not only those working in the facility or those imprisoned within its walls, but the families of inmates and officers /correctional staff, the local community, and the relationships within the law enforcement community as well. As discussed in the text, there are several areas in which professionalism in the field of corrections must address to effectively maintain if’s facilities. While there have been significant gains in recent years, there are still areas which continue
Critical Reflection In this assignment, I am going to define cultural awareness and cultural intelligence, and will also discuss how they relate to each other. Cultural awareness is the foundation of communication; it involves the ability to standing back from over selves and becoming aware of cultural values, beliefs and perceptions (Brislin.2006). Being aware of own cultural includes the goals and boundaries of a cultural; it also includes religion, language and relationships. On the other hand cultural intelligence has various meanings (Brislin.2006).
Furthermore, the parole system is known to have a multitude of problems laced within it, these problems can be solved by focusing on parolee and parole officer relationships, and partaking in systems that improve the underlying issues. Following through to fix these affairs may seem unrealistic, but a solution could be in sight. Issues within the parole system in the United States include the ineffectivity of parolees meeting with their supervising
As many years ago female were allowed to join Victoria police, it eliminated the discriminate against women in workforce. Similarly, employing people from different cultural background would mean abolishing racial discrimination. Racism is a criminal offences and police, as an organisation, aiming to reduce racism in society would need to finish racism first in the police workforce.
