When the department first began, they only ran fire calls. In October 1993, the department started to answer life-threatening medical calls by implementing the First Responder program. To this day, the Durham Fire Department services the community not only by answering fire and medical calls, but they also inspect buildings for fire hazards, community education and events, Hazardous Material Response, and Technical Rescue. The first record of firefighting dates back to the 2nd century during Egyptian times. The fire service has made tremendous strides over the years, including when Ben Franklin founded the Union Fire Company in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1736, which was the first volunteer fire company. Since then there have been many great leaders who have led the fire service to be what it is today. One person who is most well-known for their impact on the fire service is Chief Alan Brunacini; also known by his friends and coworkers as “Bruno” (Foskett, 2020). Bruno joined the fire service in 1958 with the Phoenix Fire Department.

First Responders put their life on the line for innocent people everyday. They are the first ones to arrive on scene bring help or supplies to those in need. Those responder are Police Officers, Paramedics, Firefighter, Emergency Dispatchers, and Military Personal. Many people do not realize the amount of stress that being a first responder can put on a person.
