While reading the article, “What Reading Does for the Mind” by Anne E. Cunningham and Keith Stanovich, I could not decipher some of the complex academic text. At first I did not know how to approach a challenging informational text, but as I was halfway through the academic reading I started to understand a little bit more. Ms. Jones helped my peers and I to break the text paragraph by paragraph in order to read the text with facility and intellectual engagement. As an academic reading, the text was very informative and long. It had complex vocabulary that needed to be searched up. A phrase that meant something in one sentence turned out to be a long stressful paragraph with complex words. Considering the difficult text, it is possible that the text was written that way to advise people to begin working on their reading abilities. Although the text was difficult, the author’s point was coherent: the earlier we can get children to start reading, the better they can develop students’ decoding and word recognition. But with all that, I understood the importance of reading and applied it to my own knowledge. …show more content…

As a child, I loved reading big books, especially chapter books to advance my vocabulary. Every Friday in elementary school, I would choose a different chapter book to read because I enjoyed reading. Although I loved reading, I would often be sure the book wasn’t too advanced because advanced books usually made me lose concentration. However, I acquire most of my language from television, despite that I love reading, because the television has a variety of educational programs. The television has been one of my most common ways I’ve learn to build vocabulary since it’s a lot more entertaining than reading a book.
