The vigilantes of Montana were to fight off criminals and make the state safe for the women and children to live in but in the eyes of some citizens saw them as criminals.
There was many vigilante groups all over the state of Montana in 1863 and one of those vigilantes was simple x. Simple x was one of the most known and notorious vigilante in Montana. As a vigilante he would try to stop criminals all over the state of Montana and stop them from robbing stores and stealing gold. His real name was John X Beidler. When he came to Montana it was during the gold rush and saw all the crimes going on. He was living in Helena with his new lie outside of vigilante work. When he became a U.S marshal he was praised as a savior of Montana and help are state to be safer to live in. After he was in his older years he was still living in Helena Montana as a U.S Marshal but was close to dieing. John X Beidler was born on August 14, 1831 and died January 22, 1890 (History.com). When he was a vigilante he was brutal and he was the one who always wanted to hang people. Henry Plummer was so hated that the citizens made a group to stop him and kill him. They had the police try and stop him and kill all of his crew but failed to get Henry Plummer but they caught a large sum of his crew. After The police failed a group of vigilantes came and caught him and hung him with Jack Slade and twenty two other men. Jack Slade was not a vigilante and never killed a man. Jack Slade lived in Virginia City and was a drunk that would threaten people to kill them. The reason he was hanged was because the people of the Virginia City wanted him to leave.
