Before the 1920s women’s fashion included floor length dresses that were usually reworn every day. Wearing the same dress every day was seen as a normality during this time and owning too many dresses could have been considered frivolous. In the 1920s however many women owned multiple dresses that they did not have to wear every day or even week.

At the end of World War I and World War II, after women had taken over male jobs while fighting, men returned but women wanted to keep the jobs they had obtained when the war had ended (Stoneham). Women of the wars had gained lots of independence, but when the 1950s came around women lost it and became more domestic. The women of the 1950s returned back to the idea of being required to work at home and that they had no place in society. But 1950s women were more than just a passive link between working women of the war and political activists in the 1960s, the 1950s gave women the drive and motivation to be as strong in society that they are today. From this excerpt, we get the idea that women before the 1920s often never fought for themselves and went along with what the men said. However, this idea did not last for long, as women began to change their roles in society, starting with their style of clothing. Before the 1920s, dresses were longer and covered everything including shoulders and ankles. Hairstyles consist of long hair pinned up elaborately with pins, bows, and headbands. However, during the 1920s, women’s dresses began to get shorter, and showed their legs up to the knee.
In the 60’s, marijuana and heroin can be strongly connected to Timothy Leary, a radical Harvard professor, urging the world to try LSD. The 60’s were the heyday of illegal drug usage. Throughout history it has gone from dresses that reached the ankle to mini skirts that only come down a few inches on one’s legs. The change in clothing is changing with women’s roles in society.
