It was a time of great changes in many aspects: new inventions were discovered and liberal and feminist's ideas started rising to the surface. The feminist movement started rising up again, and the second wave of feminism blossomed once more. This occurred due to many factors and events that influenced American society. Liberalism and human rights movements gain power, the civil right act of 1964, which forbade discrimination in employment (Taylor, 2009). Many new fashion styles "were born" around the 60's such as: Miniskirts, Long flowing skirts, Loose waist dresses, feminine disco style, pants, Work clothes, low heeled shoes, "hippie style" and T-shirts. One of the most notable items was the sheath dress, and specifically, of the black Givenchy dress of Audrey Hepburn. In 1961, Hepburn wore a Hubert de Givenchy black sheath dress in the film 'Breakfast at Tiffany's'. Her dress latter became known as 'The Little Black Dress'. In 1962, Marilyn Monroe wore a Jean Louis sheath dress while singing 'happy birthday' to then president John F. Kennedy for his 45th birthday. It became a fashion symbol and also a feminist feature. The sheath dress was looser and shorter than the common dresses that were wore before. The 60's brought a fresh breeze to women's status in society. They were no longer bound to corsets and heavy dresses. Women and Fashion alike has become much more liberate and women status began to change.
