Las Vegas On October 1st, 2017, 64-year-old Stephen Paddock shot and killed fifty-eight, concert attendees. , and injured 527 more. Paddock planed an attack months prior to the shooting.
The 1900s was a time period filled with political corruption, social inequality and injustice, discrimination, poor working and living conditions. The progressive movement resulted in response to these issues. Members and advocates of this movement were usually white (some blacks too), middle-class, Christian, college educated women (and men). They sought to achieve social justice through equality and enhance life in America for everyone. To further the nation’s democratic ideals, they hoped to incorporate reforms based on the expectations of the majority public.
This was at a time when there were no laws for child labor. Child labor was treacherous and some important people stepped in to stop it. These working conditions were hazardous and the kids were not safe. Child labor affects the child’s mental and physical health and it keeps children from struggling in school.(Doc. 7) Also, the reason why there were so many accidents in factories is because there were no safety regulations and requirements for uniforms.(Doc. 2)
The popularity of the Progressive movement in the early 1900's was due to several social and cultural changes in the United States. In the wake of chaotic reorganizations of the country after industrialization and urbanization, as well as the influences of earlier ideological movements such as Populism and Pragmatism, the Progressives sought to bring order and progress to society through central planning, social reform, and even social control. The intellectuals were understood to have the best interests of the people in mind, and therefore had the responsibility to intervene in society through the means of the state. These areas of intervention included sanitation, inculcation of certain moral and behavioral habits, environmental conservation,
Peter Girgis Period 1 The Progressive Movement Through 1890 to 1920 American Social reform called themselves progressives. The conception of Progressives was that they could make social and economic reforms. The Progressives were college educated and believed that government could be a tool for change in America. While the Industrial Revolution caused many social and political issues, the Progressive Movement solved these problems by informing by informing the public and passing series of legislation like Child labor, Meat Inspection Act, and Women Suffrage.
Also During this timing child labor was at it highest and worst, having the progressives convince the states to pass laws that set a minimum age for employment and established other limits on child labor, such as maximum hours children could work also having young children to be in school instead of at work. Being a woman at this time wasn’t its best. Woman having lower pay than men while doing the same amount of work, people having to work in worst of conditions, Having the union “NAWSA’s” be formed and woman getting their rights. To summarize this discussion the Progressives were very important during the early 1900’s.
The leaders of these movements, or reforms, are called ‘reformers’. Two of these reformers were Elizabeth Cady Stanton, leader of the women’s rights reform, and Horace Mann, who led to improve education globally. Elizabeth Stanton was many things; an American suffragist, social activist, abolitionist, and a leader of the early women’s rights movements. One of the greatest things she did was initiate the first organized women’s rights movement.
Activists and reformers played a pivotal role in shaping the United States during the period from the 1860s and 1920s. They advocated for various social, political and economic reforms, bringing about significant changes in American Society unlike any seen before. These movements were led by many different people and organizations who demanded change through legal and social means. During the 1860s, the United States was coping with the aftermath of the Civil War and the challenges of Reconstruction.
Because of the appalling and exhausting work that children were allotted, many people began to child labor, child slavery. Long hours of exhausting work deprived the children from getting a good education and reduced their chance of having a good future. Louis Hine is the schoolteacher who became a photographer in order to investigate the truth behind child labor. He put his life on the line by snapping photos that proved the abuses of child labor, which were meant to be cloaked and concealed from the public. The Industrial Revolution, which took place from the 18th to 19th centuries, was a period during which predominantly agrarian, rural societies in Europe and America became industrial and urban.
The first decades of the twentieth century marked a significant shift in the roles of women in society. As the country shifted into a new era of industrialization and modernization, women began to challenge traditional societal expectations and advocate for greater freedom and equality. Different groups of women defined freedom in different ways. For middle-class white women, the suffrage movement was about gaining the right to vote and having a say in the political process. For working-class women, the fight for freedom was about gaining economic independence and the right to work outside of the home.
In the period between 1900 and 1920, the federal government and reformers were very successful in bringing social, economic, and political reform to the federal government. While not every aspect of it was successful, the rights of women, fighting against child labor and limiting the control of trusts and monopolies were three distinct successes of that time. Even before the progressive era, women challenged their place and articulated new visions of social, political and economic equality. The progressive era was a turning point for women as organizations evolved fighting for equal rights. Woman began to become very involved in a variety of reform movements.
The reform wanted the government to create protective laws against exploitative labor in factories. The American sociologist Lewis Hine was a strong activist of this movement and was the pioneer to what we now call ‘documentary photography.’ In his documentary photographies, Hine mostly captured the reality in which kids lived inside the factories. Furthermore, in his captions of child labor, Lewis focused to depict how small kids were compared with the machinery they handled.
Some of the significant reform movements of the 1900’s was the meat packaging movement that lead to better workplace conditions and better quality of food, the there was the suffrage which allowed women to vote, ten finally the reform of children at the workplace which exposed to the public what conditions were like for children in the workplace. Some significant activist were Upton Sinclair who wrote The Jungle and many other books that changed the face of the workplace and Elizabeth Cady Stanton who brought about the woman's right to vote. Tactics that activist used were peaceful protest such as with the suffragettes, then there was the spreading of information through books and newspapers like sinclair upton, and finally hunger strikes forcing
When the immigrants came to the United States they was offered jobs in factories and on farms. Children (under 13) was expected to work in the factories just like the adults,they was expected to work 12 hour shifts, they had no idea what was going on, they didn't understand what breaks ment, they didn't understand why they was made to work like they was having too, this is child labor it was illegal in the late 1800s and early 1900s. When the (immigrants) arrived to the United States they came into ports, and was unloaded.
The Progressive movement began as an idea to fix the cities, however, it involved a lot more than just fixing up the cities. Many reform efforts that ranged from cutting down on poverty, improving the conditions of urbanized housing, and labor reform. The Progressives wanted impactful rules by the government on industry. During the Progressive movement, women were one of the major groups that battled hard for reform. Women were involved with many of the reforms like clean water sanitation, collection of garbage in areas stricken with poverty, and education of underprivileged children.
