On October 1st, 2017, 64-year-old Stephen Paddock shot and killed fifty-eight, concert attendees., and injured 527 more. Paddock planed an attack months prior to the shooting. He reserved rooms at two different hotels overlooking two other major concert festivals. He arrived at Mandalay Bay on September 25, 2017. He requested a different room in the hotel which overlooked the Country music festival. He then set up his arsenal of weapons. Cameras show Paddock moving more than ten suitcases into his room. In total Paddock had twenty-three fire arms, including; assault rifles and handguns, and a large amount of ammunition. Even more guns were found in his homes. The door to the 32nd floor had been barricaded. Upon arrival onto the floor Campos heard a commotion coming from Paddock's room. When he approached he was shot in the thigh by one of two-hundred round shot through the door of the hotel room. After shooting Campos, Paddocks then used a hammer to break two windows in his room. He unleashed his attack at 10:05pm and began firing upon 22,000 concert goers. He shot over 1,200 from multiple rifles. Many people mistook the gunshots fireworks. The attack lasted about ten minutes with pauses in between. When police officers finally breached paddocks room at 11:20pm they found him dead with a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. In the end Paddock had shot and killed 58 people, while another 546 were injured in the attack. Paddock was a successful real estate investor and a regular gambler at many hotels in Las Vegas. Most mass shootings happen with the use of semi-automatic weapons. In 1966 an Ex-Marine sniper climbed a tower in the university of Texas. From there he used a semi-automatic rifle to shoot and kill 14 people. Prior to the shooting he also used the rifle to kill his wife and mother. Without the use of semi- automatic weaponry, he would not have been able to accomplish his mission.
Prior to 1960 the motive to mass shootings had been with personal feuds or families. The shooters would attack people the know first, and any bystanders would be the next targets. They would be driven to the last straw and just break. Any altercation with people in the past would come up and they would seek revenge. From the 1960's to today the mass shooters have been driven by a different motive. They have feuds with society, the Government, or themselves. They target groups of innocent people.
