The main goal of nationalism is to create a unified state with a single cultural identity. Before the age of nationalism, Italy and Germany did not exist but were made up of several smaller provinces and territories. The feelings of nationalism allowed Otto von Bismarck to unify Germany and Cavour to unify Italy, each into a single nation to join the rest of the great European powers.
