Prior to the war, while women were working in factories, their children were working to help out the nation too. After the war, the baby boom was the single largest growth industry of postwar America and in the 1950s, America grew by almost 30 million people (chafe, 117). Post-war, teenagers stayed in school and could get a part-time job if they wanted and as a result, which also contributed to the economy was that they spent money on things that they liked, such as rock and roll music. Rebel without a cause portrayed concerns over the growing youth culture and perceptions of juvenile delinquency in the first scene; Judy was wandering around at 1:00AM because her father wiped off her lipstick. She said she thought he would’ve rubbed her lips off.
Oppositional stance against policies or institutions is prominent just as it was with youth counterculture
Youth enjoyed the aspect of ‘independence’. They did this by starting a wave of strikes in 1965 effecting almost every university and college. They were going around demanding more in their education and elimination of rules and restriction imposed on them. 500 million youth turned up to join forces in peace, use marijuana and listen to the artists such as Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin who idolised the use of drugs, sex and opposition to the Vietnam War. Youth movement was strong as they were all willing to cross the government, however the youth movement began to fade following a series of violent crackdowns on protesters which involved several deaths and many injuries.
The anti-war movement was characterized by a spirit of rebelliousness and defiance, as young people challenged the authority of the government and rejected the status quo in favor of a more peaceful and inclusive
I do believe the statement is valid. The younger people were uneasy with everything being, exactly the same, they didn’t want to be like everyone else. When they realized that most of the people were all doing everything the same, most, they didn’t feel comfortable in the 1950’s. Alas the beginning of rebellion began, the teenagers wanted to become their own unique person instead of being similar to another. This rebellion also increased crime, teenage crime.

During the 1960s two large student activism groups emerged, primarily due to the US’s military presence and actions in Vietnam, but also because of the freedom of speech and social justice movements. One of the groups, the SDS, referred to themselves as the new left, not to be confused with the communist and socialist left of the 30s and 40s. These students disagree with the United States’s consumer culture. They also scorned the idea of war in Vietnam and protested the draft. These students were also active in the Free Speech Movement.
The war in Vietnam and opposition to it by the students of America, further worked to separate the countercultural generation from the values and ideals of their parents and the government, who stood as symbols of hypocrisy in the eyes of youth. This atmosphere of united protest against the war by the youth, as well as the increasing generation gap, ultimately gave rise to another complex form of the counter culture, the hippies. The hippies who were “Largely white, middle class, and educated…” , according to the St. James Encyclopedia of Popular Culture, “… whipped up their own philosophy of natural living, easy sexual and social relations, sincerity, and hedonism…”, adapting beat values of drug use for opening the mind, relaxed attitudes
Rebellion is the act of disagreeing, in short. Things such as protests are a great example of rebellious action because it is a bunch of individuals who are going against the things they do not agree with. Schools commonly face small bursts of rebellion from students who don’t do what they are supposed to. In the first chapter of Into the Wild, Gallien is talking to Chris McCandless about a hunting license when he states, “ ‘how I feed myself is none of the government’s business’ “ and then afterwards says, “ ‘Fuck their stupid rules’ “(Krakauer 6). McCandless feels that he does not need a hunting license to be able to kill animals in order to feed himself.

The Vietnam war was the leading cause of the split between all major groups of individuals. From this time derived those that fled, those that protested, and those that kept their opinions to themselves. This period featured freedom and the viewpoints of different civilians. The unorthodox group of individuals that stood out from society came to be known as hippies. These beings went against all previous norms of society and alienated themselves from societal rules.
The Music Revolution The Sixties were an exciting period with the beginning of a social, economic and Cultural Revolution, influenced by the music industry that was deeply involved into causes. This propensity took place in a turbulent period where some folks called it the "decade of discontent" because of the race riots and the demonstrations against the Vietnam War. However, other individuals called it the decade of "peace, love, and harmony", because of the peace movements and the emergence of Hippies, called “flower children.” This decade was about assassinations, unforgettable fashion, new styles of music, civil rights, gay and women 's liberation, Vietnam, peace marches, sexual freedom, drug usage, Summer of Love and Woodstock Festival. All of these factors caused a revolutionary transformation in the world of well-liked music, establishing melodies as a form of raise voices and express feelings.
In the early 60’s many remarkable events in history occurred such as “The Civil Rights”, “Cold War”, and many others. However, I believe that this event which arose in 1960 was a very remarkable act that affected not only that generation but its posterity as well. The 1960s was a period when long-held values and norms of behavior seem to breakdown particularly among the young. The teens of the sixties were disillusioned with America. They were tired of a hypocritical society that was riddled with conformity and rigid conservatism in other words, people were holding to old traditions and ideas that they opposed to change in their society.
One thing that influenced who I am today is my early childhood. I grew up in Asmara, Eritrea which is a country in Africa next to the Red Sea. When I was only a year old and my sister, Yosan, was four, my parents decided to risk everything and leave Eritrea to come to Chicago. I was raised by my grandma due to my parents departure, when I was about one years-old. Life is difficult for young adults in Eritrea.
Youth subculture is often defined or distinguishable by elements such as fashion, beliefs, behaviours or interests. Many subcultures are related with specific music genres, a telling example is that Mods like Soul&Jazz and Rockers prefer Rock&Roll. Also, vehicles have played an essetial role in youth subcultures. During the 1960’s in the UK, mods were associated with scooters while rockers were associated with motorcycles. What are mods?
