The formal definition of abuse is the improper usage or treatment of an entity, often to unfairly or improperly gain benefit. There are many different types of abuse and the essay touches base on four different types. Abuse is a spectrum that ranges from controlling, to emotional abuse, to physical abuse.
Zora Neale Hurston, author of Their Eyes Were Watching God, introduces Joe Starks into the novel as a controlling, yet successful man who falls under the control of his own problematic characteristics. These traits influence actions of his which work for and against his favor. Joe is notably prideful; however, his insecurities cause him to verbally and physically mistreat Janie because he feels threatened by her better attributes. Joe’s pride is the drive for his ambition. It motivates him to do various activities that will bring him success, recognition, and admiration from his peers, such as when “he [unwraps] [the street lamp] and [has] it wiped off carefully and put up on a showcase… for everybody [in town] to see” (44).
In The Things They Carried, by Tim O’Brien, many of the characters’ thoughts stay centered around love. The Things They Carried is a collection of short stories based upon Tim O’Brien’s time in the Vietnam War. Overall what the reader can see is that none of them can exactly define it because love is always changing. One day a person might be madly in love and the next day the feeling could be gone. However, at the end, they cannot find out the definition of love even though they talk on the subject for a day long. The author T.S. Eliot was in my opinion a highly educated man looking at his educational background. For reference Eliot attended Harvard for both his undergraduate and graduate degrees. Not to mention Eliot studied abroad in Paris as well. However, Eliot could not have been able to receive such high education if it were not for his parents who had good jobs and provided Eliot with a comfortable upbringing. Likewise in terms of having wealthy people of high attainments in one’s life, Eliot’s grandfather, a Unitarian minister, had founded Washington University!
