The story “What You Pawn, I Will Redeem” by Sherman Alexie is about a Spokane Indian man named Jackson who could not get his life together despite being given the opportunity to do so. Jackson struggles with being an outcast to society in the story. Jackson had lost a light in his life, mostly due to his own stubbornness. ‘’Piece by piece, I disappeared. I’ve been disappearing ever since.’’ Alexie, S. (2003). Jackson is a man with many demons to face if he wants to reconnect with past loved ones if he wants to live a normal life. Jackson’s ordeal reveals the true nature of the society he lives in, by providing insight on people’s compassion and sympathy, at the same time also revealing the character’s beliefs and values. The conflict in this story is man vs. self. Jackson is undoubtedly his own worst enemy; it is the exact definition of insanity. He persists in making the same mistakes and hopes for a different outcome each time. Being a social misfit does not bother him. They do not have the best influence on his as they are all just like him. They are social individualist. Jackson and his friends may not fit in with society, however they do fit into their own little group that he sticks with. Many of them have struggles just as he did with alcoholism, failed relationships with their spouses as well as their children. From so many different walks of life, the old, the heterosexual, the bisexual, Native American’s of different tribes, and the Caucasian, they all work together to help Jackson get enough money to buy back his grandmothers dancing regalia. They manage to resolve their differences and see their similarities by focusing on their own group instead of focusing on the negativity from society.
