Ashleigh is faced with a hard decision. Will she betray her mother to get money for her dad? Or will she let her father deal with his own problems? Ashes is the name of the story. Her parents are divorced, her mom is straightforward and realistic, and her father is a dreamer. Ashleigh will not take the money, She knows how much trouble she’ll be in, Ashleigh’s dad doesn’t keep many promises, and Ashleigh's dad is irresponsible.
Ashleigh knows that her mom will find out, being the organized person she is, there is no way she won’t notice. Ashleigh’s mom needs that money for emergencies. That’s Ashleigh’s mom’s safety money. If there is an earthquake or other natural disaster, they don’t have anything to fall back on. Also, she knows that her mom is very organized. “I hate to speak against her, but she’s not a dreamer, Ashes. She’s the most level headed woman I know. As straight as a yardstick.” Ashleigh’s smart, she must know that she won’t get away with taking two hundred dollars. And she loves her dad, so she doesn’t want to risk losing him.
