The Jungle by Upton Sinclair follows the main character Jurgis Rudkus who is an immigrant from Lithuania. Jurgis immigrated to the United States and made his way to Chicago in order to follow the path of a legendary hometown name, Jokubas, who supposedly made a lot of money in the states. Upon reaching the United States and arriving in Chicago they realized it would be much harder to establish an income in a city they weren’t familiar with. Their luck changed when they happened upon the infamous Jokubas and found out he ran a local delicatessen in the stockyards in Chicago. Jokubas helped them find a place to sleep for the night in a boarding house while they used those first days to look for work in order to move to a nicer place of living.
'Across Five Aprils' is a novel written by Irene Hunt that takes place on the farm of Creighton's family in southern Illinois during the American Civil War. This book extends five Aprils from 1861 to 1865.The American Civil war was happening between the Union and the Confederate Army. The American war is breaking families apart because of the disagreement of the concept of war. When the war begins, Creighton's son, Jethro sees that the war may be dividing north and the south from each other but also dividing people between his family. It wasn't what Jethro imagine the war would be like.
The book “In the lake of the woods”, written by Tim O’Brien, is about a Vietnam veteran and politicians story. The main character, John Wade, is a Vietnam veteran who was involved with a brutal massacre. John was also a politician, and in fear that the massacre he was involved with would affect his political career, John does everything he can to cover up this incident. During this time John's wife mysteriously disappears. John has an ambition throughout the story to cover up what happened to profit his own career.
(AGG) Going through the phase of loss makes someone a new person, Najmah’s story is based off of this experience in her life. (BS-1) As a result of Najmah’s father and brother being kidnapped, Najmah changed her way of living for the rest of her journey. (BS-2) After the death of Mada-jan and Habib, Najmah’s view of her family was changed. (BS-3) Najmah becomes courageous towards the end of the book, and knows what she will do in order to survive.
Authors of picture books use various elements to appeal to the audience. Marisa Montes’ statement “The best picture books are warm, humorous, and can be read again and again. There must be something new to take away each time you read it. It has to hold up to multiple readings. There must be substance, depth and layering” is not true in every case because not every picture book will contain all of these elements.
Chris McCandless and Henry David Thoreau are followers of the 19th century philosophy Transcendentalism. Transcendentalism is the belief that everyone has the wisdom in them to be one with God without having to go through a priest or be in a church. Transcendentalists base this philosophy on self-wisdom, nature, and social reform. Jon Krakauer’s Into the Wild shows Chris McCandless’ choices and parallels to Henry David Thoreau’s transcendental beliefs from Walden. One transcendental belief that Chris McCandless follows is living deliberately.

When people are asked to imagine the struggles of day to day lives, they predominantly think about not having enough gasoline for their cars or embarrassing oneself in front of others. What is often over looked is the harassment and hypersexualization of women all over the world, twenty-four seven, seven days a week. Barbara Kingsolver in her work of fiction, The Bean Trees, has given readers all over the world an insight of few realistic women’s struggles in the revolutionized world. The book follows main character Taylor Greer as she deals with having an unknown baby handed to her through starting over her life. She learns the real world through an unshielded window.

The author portrays the mental limits of humans when we look at the character Ryan. Ryan at the beginning of the story was just a normal teenager, but at the end of the book he turned into a murderer.
During the formation of the United States of America, the values that were set into place for an American society shunned the recognition of anyone who was not of a certain race or gender. This continued with the fruition of the enlightenment ideals as these were also developed with a select few in mind, which were mainly privileged white males. These untold standards of being an “American” lead to the direct pre-meditated murders of hundreds of the Osage which is recounted in the book, “Killers of the Flower Moon” by David Grann. Since the Osage were benefiting from the needs of White people, in operating their land within a within a capitalist system, this fact was threatening to white society who were “supposed to” benefit from the enlightenment
Hardships come in various levels of intensity. Some are easier to bare than others. “Blackberries in June” by Ron Rash hands out a great deal of hardships that one family could hardly take. Jamie, one of the man characters of the story, must navigate through these hardships and figure out what is best for her husband and self. While dealing with an extremely jealous sister-in-law, dream abandonment to help the good of the family, and constant worries that something will happen to Matt, Jamie must decide if this will make or break her.
Monsters are a topic everyone can relate to. In Where our Monsters Come From, Leo Braudy speaks of the origin of Halloween, where monsters stem from, and four main kinds of monsters and their origin. Each of these four monsters is relatable to a human element and possibly even our darkest realities. These monsters are ones of nature, creation, one stemming within us, and one of the past. Braudy’s story about these monsters has a deeper connection meant to instill in the reader with a reality on what a monster actually is: us.
Although it defines and affects everyone, the topic of “race” is a difficult one. To some, race is the most important aspect of their life, while to others race is what they check off on forms. James McBride’s memoir The Color of Water: A Black Man’s Tribute to his White Mother demonstrates racial topics and issues that discuss origins, sense of self, sense of identity, and neutrality.
In “The Chrysalids” by John Wyndam, religion plays an important role in the lives of people living in Waknuk, although it is abused and distorted for non-religious purposes. The township of Waknuk has its roots deeply buried in a strict religious system that affects a lot of those who live within it. Compassion and acceptance, which are claimed by some people in this society, do not stop discrimination against individuals because they fail to follow certain patterns as prescribed in religious teachings. The tree mentioned is one that gives. The story of the tree begins with shade, apples and branches on which the boy at first plays on. As the boy turns into a young adult and then eventually into a man, he demands more and more of the tree. Takes the apples to sell, cuts down the branches to build a house and uses the trunk to build a boat. “Every time the tree gives something to the boy, there is a refrain of “and the tree was happy.”
