The American dream is defined as having equal opportunities to achieve a lifelong goal and your personal happiness, and it is accessible when you put forth the effort and have a strong educational background; however, it may not be accessible if you are new to a neighborhood or depending on your age, gender, or ethnicity. Working hard and living towards your goals can be shown in the poem “Who Burns for the Perfection of Paper'' by Martin Espada. This poem describes how Espada began working in the paper industry, where he worked hard and earned a livelihood so that he could attend college and become a lawyer.
