The idea of the American Dream has inspired many Americans and immigrants for generation, but the lack of success has made what the American Dream stands for questionable. The American Dream relates to the idea of reaching wealth and prosperity through hard work despite whatever background one comes from. The American Dream is a strong belief for Americans considering it is the basis for the preamble of the Constitution; but as time pass, it seems as if the true definition of the American Dream is fading away and it is becoming just another paradox. We as Americans are aware of our corrupted government, yet we fail to make changes and continue our discriminatory method of ruling, and even with our corrupt government many Americans still believe social mobility is a reality for them. Americans also strive to be the best, but our nation is one of the highest to discriminate both racially and economically. The Model Minority myth plays a significant role in society because it is an impediment to many minority groups and it has had Americans disillusioned for many years. The Model minority myth also veils the inequality in American society through holding one racial group above the others, for example the Asian race “is held above others for being successful, regardless of the conditions placed upon them”, this is paramount because it “ implies that racial groups that have not done the same are somehow at fault for their own position in society”. This myth has used many “rags to riches” stories to inspire Americans that with hard work anyone can reach the American Dream despite what culture they originally come from but this myth conceals the high poverty rates and education inequality among different groups of Asian-Americans. The model minority is harmful to the American society because it fuels a false narrative of the American Dream by making it seem as if the American Dream is achievable for all even those in minority groups.
