“I feel like Asians are kind of known as the model minority, that kind of puts us in an interesting position where I feel like we're supposed to excel and succeed in the media, or we're seen in the media as exceeding in all these things as smart. All of us are not by any means” (Archie). The article “What is the Model Minority Myth?” focuses on the Model Minority myth, which is the stereotype that Asian Americans are highly successful and intelligent. Based on the author’s experiences, Blackburn discusses the major issues with this stereotype and how it leads to the discrimination of Asian Americans. As it became known that Asians were perpetrators of the epidemic, the hatred became more apparent and explicit. Since they face discrimination in social life and education, they will face a hard time achieving their goal. This relates to Blackburn’s article because Asian Americans have a hard time due to discrimination against their race, which can damage their mental health. Discrimination against Asian Americans during COVID-19 gives them a bad influence, which degenerates mental health and decreases their ability to achieve the American dream. Asian Americans are not achieving the American dream because they are treated as foreigners. In the article “What is the Model Minority Myth?”, Asian Americans face the stereotype of being treated as outsiders. Blackburn states that “the model minority myth operates alongside the myth of Asian Americans as perpetual foreigners” (Blackburn).
