Are you a helper or do you just stand by and watch? In the poem Beowulf the main character helps fight monsters to save the citizens. This shows tremendous amount of heroic skills. Having heroic skills is an outstanding thing because they are helping other people be safe. Beowulf fits the model of a traditional epic hero by being selfless, brave, and having an enormous amount of leadership skills. Beowulf only cares for other people which means he is selfless because he does not do anything for himself. When Beowulf offers to fight Grendel, this is showing us that he cares about the safety of the citizens and not himself. He wants everyone to be safe in the town, and he will fight anything that tries to ruin this because he is selfless by letting him die for other people. Beowulf had to fight Grendel's mother to save the town from living in fear everyday. "For final revenge against Grendel's vicious / Attacks, his nightmare raids, over / And over, coming to Herot when Hrothgar's / Men slept, killing them in their beds, / Eating some on the spot, fifteen / or more," (Beowulf 654-658). When Beowulf dies, he wants Wiglaf to lead his people. "Take / What I leave, Wiglaf, lead my people, / Help them; my time is gone" (Beowulf 807-809). This is significant because it shows us that Beowulf had lead his people for a long period of time, and now it is finally coming to an end because he is slowly dying. Beowulf had become one of the best leaders in the town because he has showed the people that evil can be fought. "And so Beowulf's followers / Rode, mourning their beloved leader, / Crying that no better king had ever / Lived," (Beowulf 839-841). This shows us that Beowulf will be forever missed because he had such a strong amount of leadership skills. Since Beowulf killed off so much evil in the town, it shows that he has an enormous amount of leadership
