David Packard was man out of college with no money or business knowledge. The thing he did have, though, was strong determination and a good idea. Packard went on to create one of the most successful technology giants in the world. Packard had huge pride in his work, as he said “marketing is too important to be left to the marketing department”. David Packard is a hero because he inspired others to do well and taught people of all ages and abilities to work hard.

Packard was born on September 7, 1912 in Pueblo, Colorado. Because this was a rural area, he had more than enough space to explore the world around him. He soon developed a love for science and nature. His parents wanted him to be interested in technology, so they immersed him in radios and other electronics. Because he was especially good with radios, he was invited to take radio engineering at Stanford University. Little did Packard know, but this moment would change his life. “They started the company under $500 and a good idea. The genius was not…the perfect tools, but that they had a drive, energy and creativity” (Origins). After renting a garage, they became Silicon Valley’s first startup. Although their resources were limited, their persevered and created their first product - audio oscillators. Hewlett and Packard believed in creating products that would make a difference with their customers. After being confronted at a meeting, Packard responded with “Actually, I disagree with all my elders. You also have an obligation to your customer, to your employees and to the community in which you operate. Our purpose of a company is not to make money. It makes money in order to be able to do what it’s really all about and in our case, that’s to make a contribution”
