“The Great Gatsby”, written by F. Scotts Fitzgerald in the April of 1924, is a historical fiction novel about a rich and mysterious man and the woman he is desperate to be with. All seen from the eyes on our protagonist, Nick Carraway. However, the main character to many is that of the namesake of the novel. Mr. Gatsby himself, could be considered the “hero” of the story. But is he truly the hero? Many of his actions and the impacts of them are selfish and have greatly negative reactions on many of the other characters. Gatsby can be seen as one of the main protagonists. Mostly due to his name being the title of the novel. But also because of his impact and attention within the story. He could be considered the leader of the little trio formed …show more content…
His many actions that affected the other characters consist of, most prominently, trying to get back into a relationship with a former lover, who is now a married woman. Adultery, not only is illegal, but is also just purely unsettling. Trying to get with a married woman is not exactly something that should be done. Granted Gatsby and Daisy were former lovers, that doesn’t give Gatsby the excuse to manipulate Daisy into cheating on her already cheating husband. A wrong cannot be solved by another wrong. Gatsby and his behavior does not only stretch to Daisy. Nick Carraway is possibly the most impacted victim of Gatsby and his manipulation. Nick easily gave into Gatsby and his soft spoken manner. Nick was willing to do just about anything for Jay. He knowingly had Daisy come over to have tea with Gatsby. A married woman. Nick knowingly invited a married woman so that this almost complete stranger could try and get with her. Maybe one could push that Nick is just a careless individual but we have seen that he is possibly one of the only characters within the novel to actually show emotion and care for the other characters. Nick has also fallen for Gatsby's trap as seen …show more content…
A hero and a villain. His true nature and intentions are touched upon, but never truly stated. We get the idea that Gatsby just wants to have Daisy again and that he’s done some terrible things to get her attention or try and get her onto his side. However Gatsby cannot be considered just a straight horrible or selfish guy. He does have his positive traits to him. Jay could be considered selfish, but it is obvious that he does care for other people. Especially Daisy and even Nick. Daisy is a no brainer. He’s in love with her so obviously he cares about her. As for Nick that is a different story. Nick is a loyal friend of Gatsby’s. An example of Jay caring about Nick can be seen when he sends over a few servants to take care of Nick’s overgrown lawn and shrubs. Whether or not he did this for Daisy or just for Nick is up for debate, but there has to have been a shred of thought in Gatsby’s mind that he was doing this for his friend. Another example is early on in the novel, when Gatsby invites Nick on his hydroplane. Surely a man like Nick would love to own one, and Gatsby was generous enough to invite him. Selfish or not, he did enjoy inviting Nick around and having his company. At one of his parties, we learn that a girl had torn her party dress at one of his extravagant parties. A few days later she had received a new one. Thus showing that Mr. Gatsby is a caring man. Selfish once it comes to Daisy, but a generous man
