For all the supernatural fans out there, this is the book to read. It is full of vampires, witches, and werewolves all in a modern day setting. The Struggle is the second book in The Vampire Diaries series written by L. J. Smith. This horror novel continues to bring the intensity from the first book. It tells the story of a vampire love triangle that involves two brothers and an innocent high school student. As the readers begin to read the book, they themselves will connect the personal struggles portrayed by the characters with their everyday imagination and fantasy of having a perfect high school romance. In some ways it makes the story more intense and mysterious because it allows the reader to have their own feelings and reaction to whatever is happening. Sometimes it is hard to understand how the characters really feel about what is going on. L.J. Smith incorporated Elena’s point of view on particular events by inserting entries of Elena’s journal. This really gave this horror novel an interesting flare by having both points of views. “Strange, he always seems to be involved when there’s trouble”(409). Damon Salvatore expresses how he feels about each situation by simply stated it out loud. On the other hand, it is very difficult to figure out what Stefan is really thinking, so you just have to rely on the little clues the author gives the reader about his impulse actions. The Vampire Diaries and The Secret Circle both have become popular television shows based off of L. J. Smith’s novels. Even though she does not write script of the shows, the characters and the events of the story greatly influence by Lisa’s books.
