Luther Allison was a popular solo recording artist born on August 17, 1939 in Widener Arkansas. Allison played blues, rock and reggae but, had a major impact in blues music which lead him to win many awards. Allison had many experience and events that led him to where he got. During Allison's interview in Elwood's blues: Interviews with the Blue Legends he talks about many other performers that contributed to his knowledge of music that had an impact on his singing career. Luther took many chances that led to his success by competing with other artists.
Luther was introduced to blues through the family radio that his dad would play at night.
Luther met Muddy Waters, also known as the father of modern Chicago blues, when he first moved to Chicago. I find the story of how he met Waters somewhat humorous. The story that Luther talks about during the interview is that he would walk passed Muddy's house on his way to school and Charles, Muddy's son, walks out one day and says "My dad is Muddy Waters and he plays guitar and he got a band" then Luther replies with "My brother's names is Ollie and he got a band". One of the first artist that he battled was Buddy Guy. The two battling entertained people. The most Influential guitarist for Luther was Otis Rush because he made him forget that anything else was going on, he was left handed, he could hold a note, and be mellow. Allison idolized Otis Rush and being able to play with him was a big deal. He was able to open for Otis and wanted nothing else but to show his appreciation towards him.
