“The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet” is a play about two lovers who die by suicide. Although, lots of readers believe that the cause for Romeo and Juliets death would have been destiny; for example, when Juliet said, “If he married, my grave would be my wedding bed.” This evidence shows destiny because Juliet hints to the readers that if she marries Romeo she will die. It is also thought that personal choice played an even bigger role in the lover’s death. The events and examples of personal choice are when they got married despite their family feud, Juliet faking her death, and when the two killed themselves. Running behind their own family’s back and getting married, understanding their family feud is one of the biggest personal choices in the play. Juliet chose to trust Friar and chose to drink the potion; Romeo also chose to go to that party. There are so many personal choices that played a major part in the lovers’ deaths. Although there were many of their own choices, there are choices in which it is not only Romeo and Juliet. Romeo was pressured into going to the party to help him get over his failed love. That was partly his friends Mercutio and Benvolio’s fault. Friar coming up with the plan for Juliet to fake her death and have them run away was his choice, but in the end, it was Juliets terrible desire to agree. It may have worked, but it didn’t due to the fact the message couldn’t be delivered to Romeo, which can be shown as a way of destiny. While many argue that the deaths of the lovers are because of fate or personal choices, there are a lot of times where fate is foreshadowed in the play. For example, the night Romeo and Juliet met, he mentioned that he had a bad feeling. Their death was hidden in their own words at times, and even other people. For instance, when the friar was preparing to marry Romeo and Juliet, he unknowingly foreshadowed their
