The debate of who is responsible for the deaths of Romeo and Juliet in Shakespeare’s “The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet” has been going on for centuries. Romeo and Juliet take their own lives but it’s not at the fault of their own, but instead at the fault of fate and the ongoing feud between the Capulet and Montague families. When analyzed and looked at more deeply, you can connect the feud with their deaths. Some believe that the youth and impulsiveness of the two caused their deaths. However, the people in charge of these youth are the parents. The very same parents that have carried on this feud into future generations. The feud between the Capulets and the Montagues has a history of causing major, and sometimes fatal, issues. The lack of support from the families causes the two young lovers to try to hide their relationship. Romeo and Juliet use shady and secretive ways to fulfill said relationship. “Bid her devise some means to come to shrift this afternoon. And there she shall at Friar Lawrence’s cell be shrived and married. (gives her coins) Here is for thy pains.” -Romeo (2:4:154-158) Romeo goes to Friar Lawrence and asks him to marry him and Juliet secretly in his cell. After Friar finally agrees, Romeo goes to Nurse to ask her to deliver the news to Juliet and he ends up paying her. With this, we can see that Romeo is going to great lengths to reach out to Juliet because he cannot speak to her directly without fearing death. “If they do see thee they will murder thee” -Juliet (2:2:70) This fear of death by Juliet leads to Romeo stating that he can’t live without her and would die for her. In this line, Juliet is telling Romeo that if he is caught by her family, he will be murdered. Death could not have been brought into the situation if the blood feud hadn’t existed and so strongly carried
