Fly Away Home Essay- DRAFT#1 I think in the short story Fly Away Home, Andrew wants a home because he doesn't want to be known as the kid who grew up in an airport, as well as he wants to feel safe, and he doesn't want to have to hide his identity anymore. First, Andrew doesn't want to be known as the kid who grew up in an airport. Andrew saves up money even though he could be spending that money on food or the pies he used to buy. But instead he saves up for an apartment which is not something any kid should have to do. Andrew also says “ I think Dad and I will be here forever” this shows that Andrew does not like living in the airport and wants a stable home. Andrew gets mad when he sees people meeting each other he shows that by thinking “ Why do you have homes when we don’t? What makes you so special?”. Andrew explains that he wants to feel safe when he has to be watched by the Medinas on the weekends when his dad is working as a janitor(1-2). This shows that Andrew is not in a safe environment and that he is still a little boy who needs watching a care. At the end of the story Andrew asks his dad “Will we ever have our own apartment again?” (2) Andrew says that he would “like it to be the way it used to be”. I think when Andrew says those things it made me realize that Andrew want to feel safe but doesn't want to put too much pressure on his dad. When Andrew’s dad looks in trash cans for thrown away news papers to look for an apartment, and he calls realtors to see what’s available.(2) This shows me that Andrew doesn't have much hope anymore because his dad goes above and beyond trying to find apartments and when he doesn't find anything it brings Andrew down because nothing is in their price range. Overall, Andrew wants to be safe because he has to be watched on the weekends and for many other
