In every dog there is a beast inside, waiting for the perfect moment to come out. It is inside every dog, and always has, and always will. In the book “The Call of the Wild” by Jack London we follow the story of a dog named Buck. In the story Buck is stolen and sold to be taken to the Yukon because of the gold rush that is going on the time period of the book. During his time in the Yukon he is forced to face difficult challenges to survive as a sled dog. Also while there he starts to hear a call that slowly drives him back to his primitive state. The theme survival of the fittest is expressed by Buck many times in the book as he is in the Yukon.

In the book “The Call of the Wild” there are multiple occurrences of the theme survival of the fittest shown. In the book Buck isn’t aloud to sleep inside of the ent with his master and must sleep outside. So because he must sleep outside he does this in the snow, “Buck confidently selected a spot, and with much fuss and wasted effort proceeded to dig a hole for himself” (London 20). During Buck’s time in the Yukon he is faced with a great foe, hunger. As a sled dog he is fed small rations, which he is not used to. So he learns to steal food from his masters as shown from this quote, “This first theft marked Buck as fit to survive in the hostile Northland environment” (London 24).
