Friar Lawrence is at fault for most of the bad things that happen in The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet. First of all he allowed Romeo and Juliet to get married, which started all of the problems. Also he encouraged them to get married and cause trouble. Finally he gave Juliet the potion and created the plan that resulted in so many deaths. If it wasn’t for the Friar there may have been a happy ending to The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet. When Romeo and Juliet met they fell in love instantly, even though they knew it could never work out because of their families rivalry. The Friar knew all of this, but still decided to marry them. “You shall not stay alone Till Holy Church incorporate two in one” (Shakespeare, 420). He had good intentions because he hoped this would bring the families, but in the end it made things even worse. “Go hence… Sojourn in Mantua” (Shakespeare, 438). Friar Lawrence was encouraging Romeo to run away from Verona, and all of his problems that the Friar helped him get into. Throughout the entire story the Friar was an instigator for a lot of the conflicts. He may have had good intentions, but he caused a lot of strife. Finally Friar Lawrence gave Juliet the potion that resulted in even more deaths. “Take thou this vial, being then in bed, and this distilled liquor drink thou off” (Shakespeare, 453). The Friar was telling her to drink the potion that would make her sleep long enough that people think she is dead, so she could then escape once she was believed to be dead. As we all know this plan failed miserably, causing Romeo and Juliet to both commit suicide, and it was all the Friar’s idea.
