Ladies and Gentleman, introducing tonight's show, it’s the 1980s SHOWTIME LAKERS! The Los Angeles Lakers in the 1980s were one of the best dynasties in that era, constantly winning titles, bringing home MVP awards, and have some of the best basketball players ever in that era, on that team. The Lakers were able to draft James Worthy, the number two pick in the 1982 NBA draft and helped to form a hall of fame trio with Magic Johnson, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, and helped them dominate for the rest of the decade. They also engaged in one of the greatest rivalries ever, with the Boston Celtics, beating them in the finals over and over again by revitalizing a rivalry dominant in the ‘60s, missing in the ‘70s, and returning in the ‘80s. They were led by arguably the greatest point guard of all time, Earvin “Magic” Johnson. Earvin Johnson was born on August 14th, 1959 in Lansing, Michigan, with nine brothers and five sisters as his dad worked in a General Motors plant and his mother was a school custodian. Johnson first heard the nickname, Magic, when he was a star in High school, when a sports writer saw him put up 36 points, 16 rebounds, and 16 assists and the writer recalled that performance “Magic”. Magic Johnson was capable of many great performances and many memorable moments and some of his most famous moments consist of his Junior,Junior Skyhook to beat the Celtics, starting at center as a rookie and winning the championship, and Tragic Johnson when he choked in the final moments of big games. Magic was a great player who was winning championships, MVP awards, and cementing his own legacy for the game. Before the 1991-92 season, Magic shocked the sports world by announcing that he tested HIV positive and that he was retiring from the NBA, when he retired the Lakers began an immediate downfall from their mid-80s form due to Johnson’s retirement. Kareem was an opposing big man who was extremely versatile with his incredible size, and agility being able to score with ease on offense then lock down the paint completely on defense. The Lakers made a trade in 1975 to help acquire the big man from the milwaukee bucks as the starting foundation for the future dynasty in the making. On June 16th, 1975, the Milwaukee Bucks traded Kareem to the Lakers and the Los Angeles Lakers franchise would never be the same after his arrival to Hollywood. As a completely dominant player not only in the decade but for his entire career he was always wreaking havoc on the basketball court. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar holds the NBA record for most MVPs in a NBA career with 6 of them and he got his Lakers MVPs in ‘76, ’77, and ‘80.
