The Secret Garden An unknown person once said, “Emotions are temporary states of mind, don't let them destroy you.” In the movie The Secret Garden, by Frances Hodgson Burnett the main characters seem to start out by being overpowered by their emotions. By the end of the movie, Mary Lennox, Lord Craven, Mrs. Medlock, and Collin are all in a emotionally stable place, because they learn that with trust they can “unlock” themselves and open up their emotions with each other. Mary Lennox is the main character, protagonist, and in my opinion the most dynamic character. Mary is a little girl who moved from India, due to her parents death and she is forced to stay at the Misselthwaite Manor. Medlock. Mrs Medlock is the head servant at Misselthwaite Manor, she acts rough and tough but in the inside she is very kind. She has to trust herself and come to realize that she actually is a very nice person. Medlocks rough self is the only one who has enough courage to confront Mary, none of the other servants bothered correcting Mary’s behavior. In the movie, whenever Medlock and Mary cross paths Medlock always threatens to punish her, Mary was not used to discipline since her parents did not play a huge role in her life so she felt immediate resentment towards Mrs. Medlock. From my observation while I was watching Medlock throughout the movie it was almost as she was was wearing a mask and hiding her true self so she could fulfill the stereotype that head servants needed to be rough. Medlock held her rough outside figure until one of the last scenes she appeared in. In this scene she completely broke down in tears and showed her inner soft side, everyone around her was in complete shock that she was even able to shed a tear. After Medlocks emotional breakdown she went was not the head servant anymore, which all in all was a positive thing for her. At last, Medlock finally trusted herself to believe that she wasn’t such a rough character, she let her emotions flow and captured her true
