Who is telling the story?
The book combines the consciousness of all characters to form a complete story. It is difficult to determine a single story teller since there are multiple story tellers present in the book. I think every character is story teller of the book. Each one of character’s consciousness is functional unit to promote smooth story flow from character to character. Their consciousness fragmented by others’ consciousness fragments. Each character’s consciousness is chopped into small pieces and displayed throughout the story with careful arrangement. One consciousness supplements with another consciousness to view the story from all angle of the views and provide us a full picture of the story.

We know others’ feeling and description toward Addie, but these only let us know exterior Addie. Her interior concepts and minds let us know real Addie rather than surface Addie. We know that Addie loved Jewel from her conversation with Cora in Cora’s section that “He is my cross and he will be my salvation. He will save me from the water and from the fire” (Faulkner 97). It tells us Addie is extremely loved Jewel, but it didn’t tell us why until we read Addie’s section. Addie states that “I gave Anse Dewey Dell to negative Jewel. Then I gave him Vardaman to replace the child I had robbed him of. And now he has three children that are his and not mine” (Faulkner 102). She thinks Jewel is only child that belonged to her and she owes Anse some “debts” due to her affair. Once she pays off her debts and fulfills her obligations, she is ready to die. She was right with her point that “ that was when I learned that words are no good; that words dont ever fit even that they are trying to say at” (Faulkner 99). Anse uses word “love” frequently, but it is just a word. Addie didn’t’ feel any love from Anse, and the word is useless if she can’t experience love from Anse. His love can easily pass to another woman when Anse introduced new Mrs. Bundren to family members. It is so ironic when he told Addie he loved her and turn around married
