Sigmund Freud is the first person to use psychology. He used this to make a Structure of Personality. He used 3 ideas to make the structure Id, Ego, and Superego. In Lord of the Flies, the author uses this structure of personality. In the book Lord of the Flies written by William Golding, he shows the structure of personality with Jack the Id, Ralph the Ego, and Piggy the Superego. Piggy who is the superego is the person who everybody makes fun of because he is fat and innocent. Piggy represents the Superego because he asks how can I do what is right. When the leaders refuse to believe the beast is not real, Piggy says “I know there isn’t beast not with claws and all thats, I mean - but I know there isn’t no fear, ethier … Unless we get Frightned of people” (Golding 80). This shows the Piggy represents the Superego because he is trying to convince everyone that he isn’t a wimp. Another reason the Piggy represents the Superego because he tries to stay out of trouble. Ralph represents the ego because he is always rational and thinking. When Ralph and Jack are arguing about the beast, Ralph says “Hasn’t anyone got any sense? We’ve got to relight the fire. You never thought of that, Jack, did you? Or don’t any of you want to be rescued?” (Goldings 102). This shows that Ralph represents the ego because he is showing that he is a responsible leader and wants them to rescued rather than having fun.
