Ryan Maynard Herko English 3 March 2023 Who Should be at Fault for the Death of Juliet? Who is to blame for this tragedy of the young lady Juliet? The answer is surprisingly herself. Romeo and Juliet is a play written by William Shakespeare in the year 1597. Romeo is a young man who found his true love, but the only problem is that this lady is from a family that his family hates. Juliet is a young woman who is forced to marry a man that she does not want to and can not marry her true love, Romeo. Juliet is most responsible for her own death because she threatens suicide many times, she lies to her parents, and she drank the potion blindly. To start off, one of the reasons that she died is that she threatens suicide many times thoughout the story. In Juliet's words, “If even you and your wisdom can’t help me,/ just say that my way of solving this problem is wise–/ and with this knife, I’ll put my plan into action at once.” (Shakespeare 4.1.54-56) Since she threatens suicide so many times no one knows if she would actually kill herself or not. A way to show this is when Romeo left her balcony and she was crying, but her mom walked in and she said that she was upset about her cousin, Tybalt’s, death. As Juliet stated, “Let me cry over such a deeply felt loss.” (Shakespeare 3.5.76) Her statement alludes to feeling of grief while she is really upset about Romeo leaving. With all of the times she has lied to her parents they do not believe that she is not a very trustworthy person. Some of the other topics that she lied about is that she wants to marry Paris, she never told Lord and Lady Capulet that she is married to Romeo, and that she will listen to whatever Lord and Lady Capulet says from now on.
