Jim Morris once famously said “Love can not save you from fate.” This quote mimics the famous tragedy play Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare. The play follows the story of two star-crossed lovers, Romeo and Juliet, who are the children of feuding families. Romeo is the son of the Montague family, and Juliet is the daughter of the Capulet family. Despite being aware of the risks that their relationship presents, Romeo and Juliet decide to pursue their relationship in secret. Difficulties and challenges in their relationships ended with Romeo and Juliet taking their lives. Although Romeo and Juliet committed the physical act of taking their lives, fate should ultimately be blamed for the untimely death. Fate is the underlying cause that led to Romeo and Juliet's death. In the prologue of the play it states “Two-star crossed lovers take their life”, meaning two lovers who are bound by fate, that take their lives (Shakespeare prologue, 2). From the very beginning, Shakespeare emphasizes the role fate plays in Romeo and Juliet's relationship and death. After hearing about her untimely demise, Romeo screams, “Then I defy you stars!”(Shakespeare 5.1,250). This enlightens readers to Romeo's belief that an other-worldly power was at fault for his lover’s tragic ending. Despite all the challenges that hurdled his way, Romeo found a way around them, time and time again. However, confronted by the challenge of Juliet’s death, which he could not avoid, Romeo had no choice but to blame it on fate itself. If Romeo and Juliet were able to overcome the physical obstacles that were thrown their way, and not this one, then it is safe to assume that it was because it was out of their control.
