Who Is To Blame In Dante's Inferno?

The Inferno is Dante Alighieri's first installment in his classic trilogy, The Divine Comedy. Through this novel, Dante illustrates his journey through Hell, all nine circles of it. He not only explains to the reader the layout of Hell and what each circle represents, but also who he encounters in each circle and what their punishment is. Hell consists of people who have sinned at some point in their lives; therefore, if I could choose one person to sentence to Hell, it would be Jack the Ripper, also known as Aaron Kosminski.

Kosminski was born in either Russia or Poland, and eventually settled in London with his sisters and their families according to Robert House's essay, "Aaron Kosminski Reconsidered." Because of the history of Poland …show more content…

His murder spree occurred in east London, started in August of 1888, and ended in November of that same year. There are six known victims, all of which were prostitutes. According to Richard Jones' website "Jack the Ripper 1888", Martha Tabrum was the first victim, killed on August 7th, 1888; "her killer had targeted her throat and abdomen, just as Jack the Ripper would do with the five canonical victims." Mary Nichols, Annie Chapman, Elizabeth Stride, Catherine Eddowes, and Mary Kelly all had similar fates to that of Martha Tabrum, but worse. All these women's bodies, except one, were found disemboweled and some had their throats cut. Mary Kelly's body was "virtually skinned down to the bone." The six demons represent each woman he murdered, and they're to do exactly what he did to them, but eternally. After he's attacked, his body will reform; however, he will still remember what the demons did and how painful it was. This will cause him to be in a constant state of fear, for he won't know when the demons are going to return. This symbolizes how he caused the entirety of east London to feel. They lived in fear for when Jack the Ripper would strike again, and his identity was never revealed.
