Racist perspectives are difficult to challenge in Maycomb, as they are so deeply fixed in the minds of the town folk. Racism is shown by the Caucasians in Maycomb against the ‘negro’s’ in various ways like when the jury convicts Tom Robinson guilty of raping Mayella Ewell. Despite that he is found guilty, there was substantial proof that he was innocent even though this proof was presented by his white lawyer Atticus due to his race he was ruled guilty: "She was white, and she tempted a Negro. She did something that in our society is unspeakable: she kissed a black man. Not an old Uncle, but a strong young Negro man. No code mattered to her before she broke it, but it came crashing down on her afterwards." (44-45). The writer seems to be conveying that it was a disgrace that she kissed a Negro due to that at them time blacks and whites were not supposed to have no sort of relationship and surely not in such a manner. Furthermore, Mayella is the daughter of Bob Ewell known to be one of the most racist men in Maycomb, thus in this quote Atticus is suggesting that they created this whole complot themselves.
