When you think of actress Whoopi Goldberg, you may think of her roles in films like The Sister Act, her role as co-host of the The View, or perhaps even her signature look of dreadlocks and invisible eyebrows. In reality, Whoopi Goldberg has been in the entertainment business for over 30 years and has been constantly revealing new talents, skills, and strengths. Her strengths include comedy, acting, singing, producing, writing, and creating. In this speech, I will discuss Whoopi’s iconic career and the many skills that she has shown the world.
Before Whoopi Goldberg starred in several iconic films, she moved from her home state of New York out to the San Diego area. While there, she joined an improv group: The Blake Street Hawkeyes. As she was performing and improving her acting skills, she created the characters which would later tell a story of racial issues in America. In 1983, Whoopi moved back to New York City and starred in an off-Broadway show: The Spook Show. This one-woman show was based on the characters that she had created back in San Diego. This highly-successful movie earned her an Academy Award nomination and a Golden Globe for Best Actress in 1986. Whoopi’s next major role was a supporting character in the 1990 movie, Ghost. However, this role was not easily attained. The producers initially did not want Whoopi for the role, but agreed after actor Patrick Swayze supported and fought for the young actress. Whoopi’s supporting role earned her both an Academy Award and a Golden Globe, which launched her journey to an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar, and a Tony. Although The Color Purple and Ghost are arguably her most popular films, Whoopi is also known for her roles in The Sister Act, Corrina, Corrina, and The
