A dark secret has been hidden away from everyone. Only two people know the actually truth, many have beliefs. Yet no one knows what to believe or who to believe. The play Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf carries out many truths and illusions. Which to believe is left up to the viewer. In the play George and Martha express many relationship problems they have, while Honey and Nick hide from their problems. The two couples deal with their imperfect marriage in different ways. Martha and George complain and yell at each other about what they truly believe. On the other hand, Honey and Nick pretend like their relationship is great, besides that it isn’t all that great. Martha wanted a man that was a spit image of her father, and George’s intentions were to be just like Martha’s father. This is closely related to the Oedipus complex, which is to have a desire for sexual involvement with the parent of the opposite sex. Martha was in awe of her father, she may not have wanted to have sexual activities but to mentally attracted to his attributes. But now the two argue and go on with life with no passion into their marriage. Honey has yet to figure out that Nick is only in the marriage because he knows Honey’s family is well off. This is a dark secret to keep hidden from a partner. George and Martha have a long lasting secret about their child. They were to never bring it up in front of anyone but themselves. After Martha mentions the child, George decides to follow through with the rules of the secret and ends it. A dark secret Honey and Nick were hiding was that fact that Honey was pregnant but in actuality it was a hysterical pregnancy. The fact that both of them carry on with the relationship as the pregnancy had no effect on the relationship. The hiding of these secrets brings out the truths in a relationship that looks so
