Every product ever made has a cheaper alternative. Except, of course, the product that is already the cheapest. The money of a college student can be pretty tight since tuition is highly expensive. Although almost every campus has desktops available for students in the library, not owning a laptop can still be crucial to grades. The library has its hours of operation that unfortunately do not always work with the student's schedule. Owning a laptop means being able to do school work anywhere, even places that do not offer Wi-Fi, as long as the work being done does not require material from the internet.
